Sigh. It’s Monday Morning April 19, 2010

It was spectacular over the weekend.  Warm (upper 60′s, 70), sunny, Saturday night it didnt get completely dark until about 8.  Saturday, I biked over to Trader Joe’s and the produce store next door.  After biking up many hills I get to my destination only to find out I forgot to put the lock back on my bike.  D’oh!

At least going home is mostly downhill on my favourite hill in Portland.  It’s long and steep enough that once you get going you dont have to pedal for about a mile.  Saturday night I took myself out for a date.  Sushi, ice cream, and a good long walk through one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Portland, Ladds Addition.  None of the blocks are square, they are more trapezoid shaped with circles here and there.  In the middle of all this organized chaos is a coffee shop.

Yesterday, I made a rather more successful trip to Trader Joe’s on my bike.  Remembered my lock this time!  Mission accomplished.  And a good reason to blow off laundry.

Because it was so nice, I planted some parsley seeds, trimmed the oregano and lavender, put the tomatoes and peppers outside to get some sun.  Only one of my peppers has sprouted.  I’m starting to wonder if I got bum seeds.  Bachelor buttons sprouted!

Have any of you ever planted in galvanized metal tubs?  I’m thinking of buying a few from the hardware store next week, drilling out some holes in the bottom, filling them with dirt, and putting spinach, chard, beans, and marigolds in one, bachelor buttons, cosmos, and sunflower in another.  If you’ve done this and had success or failure, leave me a note or drop me a line and let me know.  Your input will be much appreciated.

After all the sun, it’s now back to your regularly scheduled rain.

I called my parents last night because there was something I wanted to ask them for.  This doesnt happen often and it’s not what you may think.  The Sock Summit is in August, right after my birthday.  Registration is supposed to open sometime later this month.  I’d like to take 3, 3 hour classes at 70$ each, and asked if they’d pay for it as my birthday gift.  They usually send money anyway.  They said if that’s what I’m into and what I want they’ll do it. My Mom sounded like she thought it was weird, Dad’s attitude was “okay, whatever.  The socks you made for your Mom were really neat”

They are not often so agreeable.  So, um, Yea!  I have a list of classes I’d ike to take and some alternates if the classes I’d like get full before I can register.  There are some 1 hour classes on the list too, just in case.

In other knitting news, the Palmoa top got completely frogged yesterday.  For some reason I had trouble counting to 5 and 7 and thought my shoulders were going to start at the elbows.  At least yarn is forgiving, not like sewing.

More dirt tonight, more dirt tomorrow (I can only carry one bag at a time on the bus) and the rest of the garden goes in tomorrow.  Two tomatoes, hot pepper, green beans, and maybe some more sunflowers.

Whipped cream, like frosting, covers many faults April 15, 2009

Today, the Universe taught me two things.

1.  Home made, whole milk vanilla pudding is not forgiving.  If you’re making a banana cream pie put it over the banana and crust 20-30 minutes after it’s done.  Do not leave it in the fridge over night in the pot you cooked it in.  It will come out shaped like the pot and is not malleable even if it’s left to come to room temperature.  However, if you get lucky and your pot is nearly the same size as your 10 in pie pan, the pudding will come out in one piece and if you cover it with enough whipped cream you can hope no one will notice.

2.  Always read a post entirely before commenting.  If you’re not paying attention and your brain registers a few words and fills in the rest, you may very well come out sounding like an idiot.

Update: It’s always okay to laugh at things like this.  I do.  Dont be sorry.
